A resounding success for the first 3D fab+print seminar in Shanghai, China

By Chaoran Li

KCI Publishing recently organized an event in China, to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience in 3D printing and additive manufacturing and to provide a platform for networking. Supported by SAMA, the highly successful one-day event demonstrated the desire for such meetings, confirming at the same time that industry professionals are eager to share challenges, know-how and ideas.

Taking place on 19 October 2016 at the Kerry Hotel in Shanghai, the 3D fab+print Seminar China 2016 attracted 140 delegates and speakers from various fields of expertise. It brought together high-level executives, government representatives, academics, engineers, EPC contractors and insurance brokers. Whilst the event was primarily targeted at Chinese 3D providers, presenters and attendees included industry specialists from elsewhere in Asia as well as from Europe. All presentations were simultaneously translated, allowing the international audience to fully benefit from the entire program.

The opening presentations gave an overview of the current 3D printing industry situation in China and made useful comparisons to the situation overseas. As the conference progressed, technical presentations and case studies were shared with the audience. Divided into general sessions and subject-specific workshops, the seminar featured nine speakers who covered a wide variety of topics related to the additive manufacturing across different industries; development and applications of software for 3D scanning and imaging; and developments in material science for additive manufacturing.

Session 1: Additive Manufacturing across different industries

Mr. Qiang Li, General Manager at Beijing Mul-Beam Laser Technology. He introduced innovative applications of 3D printing in the automotive, medical application, clothing and other areas, and put forward the difficulties in the future development of 3D printing.

Mr. Ke Pan, Director at M.E.I. Project Engineers. In his speech he introduced the application of electron beam metal printers in the market. The most successful application area for them currently is aerospace.

Mr. Koen van de Perre, Materialise. His topic is Innovative applications of 3D printing and AM in the international automotive industry. He shared various case studies from European car manufacturers using 3D printing in their products and production process.

Mr. Lei Guo, Shanghai VP at Sunshine Laser & Electronics Technology, Compared with the explosive growth of the Internet, he believes that 3D printing needs to grow slowly, and gradually develop.

Session 2 – Development and applications of software for 3D scanning and imaging

Mr. Hai Long Chen (PhD), R&D Dept. Manager at ESUN, he let us know the latest scanning and imaging developments from China.

Session 3 – Developments in material science for Additive Manufacturing

Mr. Hang Qu, Sales Director & VP at Polymaker LLC, He believes that 3D printing material is still in the very early stages, but in the future is very promising.

Mr. Ding Jun Zhang(PhD), VP at YLM, He gave a profound analysis of metal 3D printing’s development status  in China, and expressed the optimistic outlook for the 3D printing in the domestic.

Mr. Xiaohao Zhao(PhD), Technical Engineer at Sino-Euro Materials Technologies, he told the progress and product applications of titanium materials in the domestic market .

Mr. Jiaru Lu, EOS Electro Optical Systems (Shanghai), He shared the successful experience in the market development .

Feedback of the first 3D fab + print seminar was overwhelmingly positive. Particularly for the well-rounded organization, the high level of presentations and speakers, and the amount of information shared in the open and relaxed atmosphere.
