New VDI committee deals with legal aspects of AM

The committee 105 „Additive Manufacturing“ of the technical division Production Technology and Manufacturing Methods of the Association of German Engineers (VDI) formed a new expert committee on „Legal aspects of additive manufacturing“. The constitutive meeting of the newly established expert committee took place on March 8th, 2016.

Mr. Dipl.-Ing. Stefan Kleszczynski (Chair of Manufacturing Technology, University Duisburg-Essen) took the chair, vice-chairman is Mr. Marco Müller-ter Jung, LL.M. (Information Technology) of the international business law firm DWF.
Lawyers, engineers, experts sent by manufacturers of additive manufacturing plants, industrial operators of this type of technology as well as representatives of service providers, universities and research institutions analyze additive manufacturing procedures from different technical and legal positions.

It is especially to be considered, that additive manufacturing procedures can severely change well-established processes in product development and fabrication. Moreover, such manufacturing procedures create possibilities concerning new customer- and supplier-relationships. Therefore, the VDI expert committee 105.5 is a central interface between legal and technical implications connected to the field of additive manufacturing.

It is the aim of this committee to develop recommendations for more legal certainty while using additive manufacturing procedures in industrial surroundings.
The next meeting of the committee is scheduled to take place on September 29th, 2016.
